The Benguela Higher Institute of Educational Sciences was set up in 1992, in response to an appeal launched by more than 4,500 high-school students. It opened its doors in 1994, when its 202 students were taught by a staff of 19.
Today, there are considerably more staff and students, working on seven bachelor’s degree courses and three master’s subjects.
All courses relate to teacher training, so undergraduates can study: special education; teaching geography; teaching history; teaching French language; English-language teaching; teaching Portuguese language; and teaching mathematics. Master’s students can specialise in: curricular development and educational innovation; special education; and methodology of primary education.
Students and academic staff participate in conferences and roundtable sessions.
