Instituto Superior Politécnico do Cuanza Sul was preceded by the Instituto Superior Agrario, an agriculture and agronomy college established in 1999. In 2009, it was converted into the Instituto Superior Politécnico, in the central Angolan province of Cuanza Sul – or South Kwanza.
The university has retained its original focus, and courses fall under three departments: agricultural sciences, environment and fisheries; administration and business; and health sciences. In fact, ISPCS offers only five undergraduate degrees, in: agricultural business management; agronomy; animal science; nursing; and accounting and management.
ISPCS publishes a research journal and has an onsite research centre. Its researchers participate in national conferences on science, technology and innovation.
