Your future position is at the Department of Political Science in the research area of Environmental Politics. The Department of Political Science researches and teaches in all core areas of political science, develops innovative and problem-oriented research foci, and offers a wide range of options for specialization for students. The department's staff investigates the changing forms and functions of governance, the state, and democracy in different political fields, geographic regions, and political spaces.

In the research area of Environmental Politics, a team of renowned and award-winning academic staff at one of the most advanced departments for political science in the German-speaking world awaits you. The department offers you outstanding research projects, interdisciplinary cooperation, collegial exchange and exchange with a young generation of students.

The position is to be filled from 1 December 2024 and is limited to 6 years. In the event of further funding, the position can be extended or made permanent by mutual agreement.

Your future tasks:

The primary area of responsibility is the establishment and management of the Environmental Politics Research Group (EPRG), a long-term research infrastructure led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alice Vadrot. The tasks include research support (covering the entire research life cycle from design, data collection, analysis, data curation and management, interpretation, and writing), funding acquisition, public outreach and organizational activities.

Expected:


	Active participation in research and administration of the research group’s future and ongoing projects such as TwinPolitics, Marco-Bolo and IPBES Austria
	Project applications and acquisition of third-party funding at national and EU level
	Design and organisation of events (lecture series) and international conferences
	Establishment and expansion of an independent research profile reflecting the main objectives of the EPRG
	International publications and lectures
	Independent teaching of courses to the extent of the collective agreement provisions (four, max. six semester hours per week)
	Participation in the development and design of objectives and milestones of the group and participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance of those. Participation in research group administration (related to research, teaching and public outreach).
	Contributing to the networking of the Environmental Politics Research Group with relevant national and international research institutions in the field of environment, biodiversity and the oceans, as well as exchange with the public sector and broader society.
	Developing and maintaining project related databases, as well as data management and curation.


This is part of your personality:


	PhD in political sciences and/or international relations or environmental studies, or a related field of study with a political science profile or an international relations profile or an environmental studies profile
	Post-doctoral research experience
	Excellent knowledge in the fields of international politics with a focus on environmental politics and one of the following areas: ocean protection and governance, biodiversity policies and politics, nature conservation and sustainable use.
	Interest in research related to:  global environmental agreement-making, multilateral negotiations, science-policy interfaces, data politics.
	Excellent knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative methods of empirical social science research.

Position description -

This postdoctoral research position is part of the exciting new five-year partnership between the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) and the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) at the University of Adelaide. The partnership aims to boost foundational AI research in Australia, focusing on areas such as natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning.

This role offers the opportunity to carry out cutting-edge research at the intersection of computer vision, natural language processing, and financial technologies. The successful candidate will work directly with AIML Chief Scientist, Prof Anton van den Hengel, his research team, and CBA representatives to publish high-impact research and develop innovative AI solutions for the financial sector.

The tasks of the postdoctoral researcher (innovation) will include:


	Conduct world-class research in foundational AI, with a focus on applications in the financial sector.
	Develop innovative algorithms, machine learning models, and AI systems that address real-world challenges in banking and finance.
	Collaborate closely with CBA representatives to understand industry needs and translate research into practical solutions.
	Publish research findings in top-tier conferences and journals in AI, machine learning, and related fields.
	Contribute to the development of prototypes and proof-of-concept systems that demonstrate the potential of AI in financial services.
	Participate in regular meetings and workshops with CBA to ensure alignment between research goals and industry needs.

To be successful you will need: 


	A completed PhD in either computer science, computer/software engineering, electrical or electronic engineering, mechanical/mechatronic engineering, or in a related discipline.
	A minimum of two years post-doctoral research experience, whether in academia or industry, including leadership experience.
	Programming experience and expertise in Python or languages such as Linux OS, C++, .NET, and Java, and one or more relevant deep learning libraries and ML platforms such as PyTorch or Tensorflow, Scikit learn, or CARET.


Desirable characteristics:


	Experience in large data sets and their platforms/tools, cloud-based architectures, and deployment frameworks for machine learning algorithms.
	A track record of publications in machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity.

About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The Department of Marine Technology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a PhD candidate for the EU funded project “Smart, Aware, Integrated Wind Farm Control Interacting with Digital Twins (ICONIC)”.

The ICONIC project is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Actions, the UKRI Horizon Europe Guarantee scheme, and Innosuisse. The consortium aims to develop innovative digital and physical tools to achieve fundamental breakthroughs for the integrated control of wind farms, considering the whole physical system at farm, turbine, and component levels, in particular the complex aerodynamic interactions among turbines. The proposed integrated control solutions will be demonstrated by an extensive validation study via high-fidelity simulation models, experiments at a national-level wind tunnel, historical operational data, and real-world wind farm field tests.

The main task of this PhD project is to develop an integrated digital twin for estimating online loads and the remaining useful life of critical components of wind turbine. This PhD project is supervised by Professor Amir R. Nejad.

Required selection criteria


	You must have a professionally relevant background in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Mechatronics
	Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
	You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
	You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program
	Good written and oral English language skills. This can be documented by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years. 

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period. 

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. The research group of Anne Salonen at Human Microbiome Research Program at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki, Finland, invites applications for a fixed-term position of Postdoctoral Researcher in bioinformatics of the human gut microbiome from 15.1.2025 until 31.8.2028 or according to agreement.

The vacancy is part of European Innovation Council (EIC) funded project Precision nutrition approach for increasing fibre intake and health using gut microbiota-matched sustainable fibre sources (fibrematch.eu), aiming to match dietary fibre types to prevalent functional gut microbiome subtypes to increase fibre consumption without digestive symptoms.  Our research group works on the human intestinal and female reproductive track microbiomes with an overall aim to provide understanding on how these microbiomes contribute to health and disease. We work on high-throughput omics data sets and also work with reductionist approaches on targeted microbes using genomic and phenotyping tools.

Responsibilities and qualifications

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher who is interested in metagenome data analysis and diet-microbiome interactions. The work focuses on identifying functional microbiome types relevant for metabolism of dietary fibre.

The work will involve:


	Assessing statistical approaches for classifying gut microbiomes based on functionality
	Integration of diet, microbiome, gastrointestinal symptom and other host data
	Communicating the results in scientific publications and conference presentations
	Co-supervision of PhD and MSc students on integrative NGS data analysis (desired, not an absolute requirement)  
	Additionally, the candidate is expected to coordinate omics data management in the group and contribute to new research ideas and (co)-applying for grants. Depending on interests and expertise, some teaching on microbiome and/or nutrition or bioinformatics will be available.


The candidate we seek:


	Has a PhD degree in bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology, nutrition or other relevant areas (in exceptional cases if other requirements are fulfilled, a candidate with an MSc degree may be considered)
	Has demonstrated expertise in omics data analyses and statistical modelling, preferably in human cohort and/or intervention datasets
	Has proficiency in R and Unix/Linux and knowledge on perl, python or other programming language
	Experience in cloud or HPC computing
	Has solid track record and strong scientific drive
	Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse team environment
	Has strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build scientific relationships
	Has good communication skills and proficiency in verbal and written English
	Previous experience on microbiome research, microbial metabolic modelling and/or nutrition is optimal but not required

fellowship (research humanities and social sciences) at Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) in culture and society

The Leuphana Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and Society at Leuphana University Lüneburg invites applications for 12-month fellowships in residence for 2026/27 starting April 1, 2026 and ending March 31, 2027.

The research programme aims at countering a discourse of no alternatives. It fosters engaged scholarship to uncover, support and multiply modes of social potentialization by questioning existing certainties and therefore activating new possibilities.

We invite researchers to investigate the historical, contemporary, socio-cultural, epistemological, political-economic, legal, and technical-scientific conditions of living together in a globalized, entangled world.

LIAS in Culture and Society is inspired by the idea of thinking across hemispheres and making plural societies both thinkable and realizable. The inspiration is grounded in ethos of problematization, critical diagnosis of the present, genealogies of contemporary lines of conflict, methodological openness, and cultural inventiveness.

PARTICIPATION IN AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE INSTITUTE

Fellows usually take a leave of absence to work in residence at LIAS on their research topic. They are expected to actively participate in LIAS events and receive support to organize public formats and workshops.

LIAS fellows will benefit from the many opportunities for interdisciplinary and international exchange with both the invited researchers and the artists who also reside at the institute. Also, fellows are invited to collaborate with researchers at Leuphana University and to participate in the university's' activities.

CONDITIONS

Remuneration is based on the guidelines for scholarships of the state of Lower Saxony and amounts to € 2,100 per month (tax free) plus accommodation, travel expenses and, if applicable, a family allowance. Office space at the University Central Building by Daniel Libeskind is provided. For fellows who bring their partner and/or family LIAS will provide support in settling family related matters.

ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION MODALITIES

Scholars at the level of postdoctoral researcher, assistant professor or early associate professor or equivalent who already have distinguished themselves with two to three years outstanding postdoctoral work corresponding to the programmatic outline of the institute are eligible to apply. Eligible applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application but not have received their PhD more than ten years prior to the beginning of the planned fellowship. Fluency in English is required.

	cover letter stating your motivations to apply to LIAS specifically,
	academic curriculum vitae including list of publications,
	project proposal (no more than 5 pages/2,500 words) in which you present your research project in a systematic manner (including the project's research question, explanation of the contribution to the state of research, methodological/theoretical approach, etc.) and elaborate on its 3 relation to the research programme at the LIAS in Culture and Society.


The project proposal should also include a short work plan for the time of your stay.
