The Department of History (http://www.LN.edu.hk/history/) invites applications for a Professor in any area of specialty within the discipline of history. The Department has existing strength in the studies of Chinese history, Hong Kong history, Japanese history, Pacific history, Southeast Asian history, British history, digital history, as well as various subfields including media, gender, animal, and environmental studies. Candidates whose research and teaching interests that either build upon or expand beyond our existing clusters, working on any region and period, are all welcome to apply.

The appointee is also expected to assume the role of the Head of the History Department upon his /her appointment, for at least one 3-year term. In this capacity, the appointee will manage and lead the department, and take on leadership roles within the university at large.

General Requirements

The appointee is expected to an internationally prominent scholar in his/her field of specialization.

More specifically, he/she should possess (i) an excellent track record of scholarly publications in internationally leading peer-reviewed journals and with major scholarly presses, (ii) a successful grant records, (iii) broad experience in teaching and course development, and (iv) substantive administrative and institution-building experience.

Appointment

The conditions of appointment will be competitive. The remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include annual leave, medical and dental benefits, mandatory provident fund, gratuity, and incoming passage and baggage allowance for the eligible appointee.

Appointment will normally be made on an initial contract of three years, which, subject to review and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointments with possibility of consideration for substantiation. Requirements

Candidates should have a doctoral degree in the relevant discipline, with a good teaching record with professional recognition through leadership in the field of education, and should commit to teaching excellence, curriculum development, programme coordination, promotion and management, student advising and mentoring. The prime responsibilities of the appointees are teaching and contributions to the education mission of the University. The appointees are required to teach a range of core and elective courses, and to develop new programmes, courses, teaching methods, and procedures to enhance students' learning. The appointees are also encouraged to apply for teaching grants.

The Division is looking for experienced Assistant Professor of Teaching who will (1) teach multiple subjects in both undergraduate-level and postgraduate-level programmes in data science areas focusing on industrial data sciences, blockchain, data sciences, artificial intelligence, etc., (2) work on the promotions and admissions as well as the operations for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and (3) contribute to other administrative duties as required by the supervisors.

General Requirements

Candidates should have (i) a doctoral degree in a relevant data science, computer science, business, information systems, artificial intelligence, or other relevant areas; (ii) at least 3 years’ experience in teaching relevant courses and relevant programme administrative experience are required; and less teaching experience is also considered when the candidate has strong project or industrial experience, and (iii) good command of English and Chinese (including Mandarin).

Founded in 1999, the Department (https://www.ln.edu.hk/cultural/) is the forerunner of offering a BA degree in Cultural Studies in Hong Kong. Our Master of Cultural Studies Programme, launched in 2003, gives students from mixed academic and working backgrounds the opportunity to reflect on and devise alternative ways to approach their ongoing practices. Our Research Postgraduate Programmes (MPhil & PhD) train aspiring researchers to develop in-depth inquiry into specific areas of interest. The programmes are designed to nurture global citizens with interdisciplinary, avant-garde, critical, and reflexive knowledge in the digital age.

We promote interdisciplinary research that foregrounds new ideas and drives societal changes. Our faculty members come from different areas of expertise, focusing on topics such as cultural sociology, digital media cultures, food science and technology, gender and sexualities, Hong Kong cultural identity, labour studies, migration and mobility, modern Chinese intellectual history, race and ethnicities, transgender studies and urban commons. Connecting cultural theories with civic engagement is the core of our values. 

General Requirements

Applicants should have a strong background in Cultural Studies or other related disciplines with relevant teaching and research experience. Research experience on gender / sexualities, crip theory / queer studies, class / labor, race / ethnicity, artificial intelligence and big data will be a distinct advantage.  The appointee should be able to teach and develop courses on methods in cultural research, critical writing workshop, gender and technology, crip theory and disability studies.

The appointed candidate will be a committed academic with a record of research and scholarship of international stature who will be able to demonstrate commitment to the vision and orientation of the Department and the University. The appointee should demonstrate a track record of quality publications and grants-based research in areas relevant to the department’s profile. Solid experience in administrative leadership would be preferable.

The Division is looking for experienced Research Assistant Professor who will (i) carry out research and submit papers to top journals in the field of large language models. Additionally, the appointee will be responsible for submitting grant proposals to various funding bodies. Furthermore, the appointee will have the opportunity to organize conferences, seminars, reading groups, workshops, and other related research activities; (ii) play a central role in the daily operation of the upcoming new Taught Postgraduate programme(s) offered by the Division of Artificial Intelligence. The teaching load will be two courses per year, distributed according to the needs of the Institute and upon mutual agreement. English will be the medium of instruction. The appointee will also be required to supervise students’ projects or thesis; and (iii) perform administrative duties as assigned by the Associate Dean (i.e., Person-in-Charge of the Division of Artificial Intelligence).

Candidates should have (i) a PhD degree in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a relevant discipline; (ii) a good command of both English and Chinese; (iii) a strong publication record in the top-tier journals/conferences in the relevant field; and (iv) experience in developing external competitive research proposals. Candidates with a good teaching record will be an advantage.
