Originally established as Muranga College of Technology, in 1975, MUT became a chartered university in 2016. Muranga, a town in central Kenya, is about 85km north of Nairobi.
Its degrees are spread across eight academic schools: computing and information technology; pure, applied and health sciences; business and economics; agriculture and environmental sciences; engineering and technology; hospitality and tourism management; education; and humanities and social sciences.
Accommodation for first-year students is provided in university hostels, with four students sharing a room. Bathrooms and kitchens are shared. Hostels also provide facilities including tennis and basketball courts, a gymnasium, a café and 24-hour CCTV.
MUT has an active drama club, which the university website describes as a force to be reckoned with nationally. Other clubs include Christian Union, Muslim Association, Scouts, choir and the Procurement Association.
