National Institute of Technology, Raipur in Eastern India, began admitting students in 1956. At the time, it was known as the Government College of Mining and Metallurgy – one of only three institutes in the country offering theses courses.
Gradually, it began to offer more courses in areas of engineering, computer science and technology. In 2005, it was renamed as a National Institute of Technology.
Today, its 19 departments cover these areas, but also go beyond its original remit, including geology, chemistry, architecture and humanities and social sciences.
The institute provides limited residential facilities for students: there are five boys’ and three girls’ hostels on campus.
A sports department offers a range of extracurriclar activities, including cricket, swimming, lawn tennis, yoga and volleyball. There is an onsite coffee shop and milk parlour, as well as a student canteen and dining area.
