About the Role

Working under the direction of Associate Professor Peter Speck, Flinders University is seeking a Research Associate in Virology to undertake cutting edge research into bacteriophages, to develop a phage based product, known as “PhageMesh”. In this role, the Research Associate will be responsible for attaching phages to surgical mesh, measuring their antibacterial properties, and monitoring the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, using various methods.

“PhageMesh” will enhance hernia surgeries by providing increased resistance to bacterial infections. The aim of this project is to enhance the quality of life for everyday people, improve outcomes in hernia surgery, and introduce innovative technology to a common medical procedure.

To be successful in this role, the Research Associate will:


	Contribute to the planning and execution of research by offering new ideas, reviewing relevant literature and other sources of information, actively participating in the production of data and attending seminars, meetings and conferences.
	Assist in leading the Project by collaborating with the Project Research Team to successfully deliver project milestones and Key Performance Indicators.
	Contribute to ethical, high quality and innovative research and evaluation.


About You

With a strong research track history, your well-developed technical and analytical skills will enhance the quality of research undertaken and contribute to the success of the project.

You will be capable of working independently and as part of a team to develop, improve, and implement new technology. You will proactively solve problems, meet competing deadlines, and make independent decisions as required. Additionally, you will be a good communicator, capable of establishing and maintaining positive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

The successful candidate will also demonstrate:


	Completion of a PhD in phage therapy or phage biology or significant progress towards completion of a PhD in phage therapy or phage biology. Experience in microbial bioinformatics would be valuable.
	Demonstrated experience in microbiology and in conducting experiments in animals.
	Capacity to undertake collaborative research and establish and maintain effective relationships with staff and industry.

About the opportunity

The School of Psychology are welcoming applications for a Client Intake Officer to work within a team of intake workers, conducting client intakes and referrals for the Gambling Treatment and Research Clinic in the Brain and Mind Centre.

This role involves guiding clients through the University's GambleAware program, including welcoming clients, conducting intake assessments/triage activities and making external referrals as needed. The role also undertakes data entry and administrative duties connected with the client intake processes.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


	greet clients as they enter reception
	undertake client intake for the GambleAware program which includes answering calls and following client assessment and allocation procedures
	make external referrals where appropriate
	enter client information and file notes into database
	liaise with GambleAware staff to ensure coordinated service delivery
	take minutes of meetings and document policies as directed by the GAP manager.


About you

Post-Doctoral Fellow Position: Development of innovative biomass processing for nanofibers extraction 13219

Position Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Fellow to join our research team. The successful candidate will work on optimizing methods for nanofibers extraction from various types of biomass, focusing on the development of efficient, sustainable, and scalable processes. This role provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to advancing renewable materials research.

Key duties:


	Design and execute experiments to optimize fractionation and extraction processes from diverse biomass sources.
	Investigate thermochemical, mechanical, enzymatic treatment methods or combination thereof to improve extraction efficiency and yield.
	Develop advanced pre-treatment techniques to enhance the extraction yield.
	Perform comprehensive kinetic and thermodynamic studies to understand and optimize the extraction processes.
	Investigate structure-property relationships to correlate the extraction process with the functional performance of nanofibers in various applications.
	Characterize the extracted cellulose fibers using analytical techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, and others
	Evaluate the environmental and economic aspects of the developed methods.
	Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including chemists, materials scientists, and sustainability experts.
	Collaborate with industrial partners to assess the commercial potential of the developed processes.
	Prepare research findings for publication in high-impact journals and present at conferences.
	Contribute to the development of intellectual property, including patents.
	Participate in outreach activities to promote sustainability in materials science.
	Mentor graduate and undergraduate students involved in related projects.


Criteria of the candidate:

To be considered for this role, you will ideally have:


	A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Biomass Chemistry, or a related field.
	Strong foundation in biomass processing, fiber chemistry, or green chemistry principles.
	Proven experience in designing and optimizing biomass processing methods, including chemical, mechanical, and enzymatic treatments.
	Knowledge of advanced pre-treatment techniques. 
	Proficiency in kinetic and thermodynamic modeling of extraction processes.
	Expertise in using analytical tools (e.g., FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, TEM) for structural, thermal, and mechanical characterization of materials
	Familiarity with structure-property relationship studies and their implications for material applications.
	Excellent problem-solving and experimental design skills.
	Strong communication and teamwork skills.


Qualifications:


	Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a related field.
	Strong background in biomass processing and fiber chemistry.
	Hands-on experience with analytical tools for material characterization.
	Familiarity with green chemistry principles.
	Excellent problem-solving and experimental design skills.
	Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
	Strong communication and teamwork skills.

The Role

To provide FPGA and VHDL programming and technician support to the laser payload being developed under the ARIA Photonics Project in Surrey Space Centre. 

ARIA Photonics aims to develop critical signal processing avionics and robust all-fibre architecture for space-based laser systems to enable a new, innovative generation of smaller, lighter, more resilient portable isotopologue and ppb sensing to deliver a step change in both performance and cost.

This relies on adapting telecoms industry COTS components and software radio FPGA/DSP techniques towards a new all-fibre space-qualified stabilised laser systems for geodesy with equivalent performance to laboratory systems. A flexible digital control system will enable automated operation in harsh environments, with full testing in simulated space environments undertaken.

Key Responsibilities


	To write simulation files for the current VHDL control and filter codes to make performance analysis.
	To recommend any restructuring of the ARIA Photonics firmware.
	To provide updated FDIR and risk analysis updates using Xilinx critical bits methodology.
	To support the hardware and software implementation of new ADC and DAC filters and configurations
	To create digital test result logs that details the ARIA Photonics payload performance.
	To provide general support towards the ARIA Photonics project document delivery.

Broad practical work experience in FPGA hardware development and VHDL simulation.
