The Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) is a research university located in the capital city of Germany,and has roots dating back to 1879.
The TU Berlin is apart of TU9, which is a society of some of the largest and most notable German institutes of technology. This membership allows for student exchanges between many of the engineering schools.
Based in the heart of the capital, TU Berlin is a component of one of the world’s leading metropolitan cities. Few other regions can boast such highly concentrated scientific and research activities as Berlin.
The university offers a wealth of renowned programmes within the technical industry, and is made up of some seven colleges. These include: Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Process Sciences and Engineering, Electrical engineering and Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems.
The large campuses cover a vast space across various different locations in Berlin. The main campus, however, is located in the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Moreover, there is a satellite campus in Egypt, which acts as a scientific and academic field office.
The campus is home of two innovation centres designated by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
As a technology university, campus facilities are integral to success. Students, scholars as well as guests have unlimited access to its science library – which holds three million books and journals – as well as 1,300 workstations, 300 computer workstations, several meeting rooms, and multimedia workstations.
Notable alumni include Fritz Haber, a German chemist who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1918 for his invention of the Haber-Bosch process, Wernher von Braun, an aerospace engineer and space architect credited with inventing the V-2 rocket for Nazi Germany and the Saturn V for the United States, and Wolfgang Paul, a physicist who co-developed the non-magnetic quadrupole mass filter which laid the foundation for what is now called an ion trap.

About us Recently re-founded, the Department of Engineering is rapidly expanding into a world-class research and teaching department. Research currently focuses on computational engineering, information processing systems, robotics, telecommunications, and biomedical engineering, but we are looking to establish new research themes. This post will be affiliated with the computational engineering research group within the department. We offer both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, with a distinctive approach, combining both traditional teaching methods with modern, project-based learning, catering for the needs of our students and the industries in which they will work. As a new department we have invested in new laboratories and maker space at the centre of the Strand campus in the heart of central London. For more information: https://www.kcl.ac.uk/engineering About the role This role will support the delivery of a mesh generation project, funded under a recent major £7m EPSRC Programme Grant REMODEL: Advancing Parallel Mesh Generation and Geometry Representation to Enable Industrially Relevant, High-Fidelity Simulations. The goal of REMODEL is to make major advances in mesh generation and CAD geometry to enable large-scale exascale-capable simulations for the new UK national supercomputer. The successful candidate will work within Prof. David Moxey’s group at King’s, together with the wider REMODEL project team (Swansea University, Imperial College London, EPCC and Queen’s University Belfast), to advance adaptive mesh refinement: the ability to dynamically change resolution as large-scale simulations progress, whilst preserving the geometric representation of the project. You will work within a leading group in high-order methods: a class of finite element methods that is now leading the way for future computational fluid dynamics simulations. Specifically, our group develops the Nektar++ spectral/hp element framework (www.nektar.info), and its mesh generation tool NekMesh. The successful candidate will be expected to lead developments of both tools, working towards integrated mesh-solver cycles and enable large-scale parallel simulations that adapt the mesh to fit the underlying geometry. They will also provide NekMesh with the user-focused development required to get this presently-specialist tool into the hands of general practitioners. The successful candidate will also help to represent the developments at King’s and work closely with the REMODEL partners in academia, as well as industrial partners. This is a full time contract (35 Hours per week), offered on a fixed term contract for two years. Research staff at King’s are entitled to at least 10 days per year (pro-rata) for professional development. This project will support the development of a new, lightweight battery electric vehicle (BEV) at TMUK’s Burnaston site. The vehicle will meet the rising demand for eco-friendly micro-mobility, with features including a solar roof, advanced connectivity, and sustainable materials, ensuring end of recovery and recycling. It supports the UK's move to zero-emission transport, boosts the supply chain, and secures jobs at TMUK. By developing a ready-to-produce design, the project opens new market opportunities and positions the UK as a leader in sustainable urban mobility and advanced automotive manufacturing. The Advanced Propulsion Centre UK (APC) has funded this £30.3 million project through the UK Government’s DRIVE35 Collaborate programme and aims to meet the evolving needs of urban populations while accelerating the shift to zero tailpipe emission transport by validating a novel, lightweight BEV in the L6e category. The University of Derby will play a critical role in the project, leading on real-world testing and analysis, and leveraging its expertise in micromobility user behaviour and solar energy viability. Together, the consortium partners are studying how to shape a smarter and more sustainable future for urban mobility across Europe. Acting as a ‘living lab,’ the University will evaluate how the BEV fits evolving patterns of sustainable urban mobility and assess its potential to transform city transport. As micromobility becomes central to the future of urban transport, this study marks a vital step towards understanding and meeting the evolving mobility needs of city populations while accelerating the shift towards reduced congestion emissions and enhanced urban accessibility. The research aligns with the University of Derby’s flagship Derby Urban Sustainable Transport Transition (DUST) project, focused on enhancing the city’s green spaces and promoting low-carbon mobility.
