Basic information and contact details for Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology
The Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology (TUMSAT) is a Japanese national university which is home to some of the latest research and innovation related to the maritime and fisheries industries.
The university was established in 1875 as Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine with the help of Japanese business magnate and founder of Mitsubishi Iwasaki Yatarō. In 2003, the university merged with Tokyo University of Fisheries to exchange practices and bring its education to the next level.
With campuses located in two of the most innovative municipalities in Tokyo, called Koto and Minato, the institute aims to provide extensive education related to oceans and lobbies for their sustainable development.
The higher education institution provides degrees in maritime science and engineering, natural and biological sciences, all taught in the faculties of Marine Science and Marine Technology. To receive practical education, students have the chance to develop their navigation and marine observation skills on board TUMSAT’s training ships, located off the coast of Japan.
TUMSAT is building a new faculty called the School of Marine Resource and Environment, which aims to broaden its catalogue of degree courses and explore new aspects of oceanic energy and preservation of sea-floor resources.
The university is partnered with institutions such as Fukushima University and Iwate University, with which it carries out joint research.
TUMSAT tries to continue Japan's legacy as a leader in oceanography through its motto: “to know and conserve the sea”.
