Do you have experience teaching construction and the built environment in Further Education or are you an experienced surveyor, construction manager, architect or civil engineer looking for a new challenge?

Do you want to join a team developing a multimillion-pound retrofit centre for Sustainable Construction? University College Birmingham’s School of Engineering, Digital and Sustainable Construction (in partnership with The University of Warwick) has developed a cutting-edge facility right in the heart of Birmingham. In September 2022, we launched Further Education programmes for Built Environment. Using only the best resources and high-tech kit in the sector, you will have one of the most inspiring facilities to work in alongside outstanding academic support from across the sector.

We are looking to recruit highly motivated lecturers to join our growing team. You will want to pass on your skills to the next generation and will need to have relevant experience in construction. Role Description

Cranfield Water Sciences welcomes applications from passionate, skilled and committed Engineering, Environmental Science, or Material Science graduates with a PhD in relevant subjects to contribute to the definition of microplastic release from wastewater treatment asset.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Research Fellow to join our dynamic team in addressing the crucial challenge of exploring the generation and release of microplastics in the wastewater asset to minimise the release of these chemicals into the water bodies and enhance the safeguarding of our environment.

You will play a pivotal role in a high-profile project of national relevance aimed at advancing our understanding and management of microplastics generated by plastic components as well as filtration systems present in the wastewater treatment asset. This involves conducting comprehensive investigations into the release of microplastic from a dedicated pilot-scale unit simulating the coarse filtration of wastewater under various operative conditions and the performance of plastic specimens under abrasion conditions to define.

Utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to operate pilot-scale reactor units and collaborating with project partners for microplastic identification, the role encompasses the planning, implementation of experimental tests and the operation of a pilot-scale cloth filtration reactor under relevant conditions and the collection of samples to be analysed for presence of microplastic. The role will also involve the assessment of the performance of plastic specimens during abrasion tests and the definition of a ranking of various polymers together with alternative materials based on abrasion resistance and environmental characteristics. This position is instrumental in guiding the water industry towards effective selection of materials in the wastewater asset as well as the management of processes to minimise the release of microplastic in the environment. Your work will contribute to a national project, inform the selection of management strategies, and optimize treatment processes to mitigate risks related to microplastic. This is an exceptional opportunity for a professional passionate about engineering, environmental science or material science to impact the water sector significantly.

About You

You will be educated to doctoral level (or close to completion) in Engineering, Environmental Science or Material Science and have experience of management research using both qualitative and quantitative methods. You will also have experience of operating pilot scale reactors in relevant environments, ideally for wastewater treatment. With excellent communication skills, you will have expertise in wastewater treatment and a background in environmental or engineered systems would be an advantage. Knowledge of microplastic generation and management and environmental performance assessment would be an advantage. Equivalent industry experience would be considered.

The Person

We are looking for a qualified Phd/MSc engineer with practical experience in delivery of advanced geomaterials/materials science or engineering characterization and analysis programs. Experience in working on CT-based geo-material science applications is highly desirable. The person should have experience in project management of scientific or research projects, involving detailed planning and delivery of project proposals and other documents related to project management and delivery. A strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to quickly develop productive, professional relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. Highly developed organizational skills and effective self-management are key.

FIMM is currently seeking a MSCA Doctoral Researcher for spatial multiplexed immunofluorescence profiling of metastases of different cancer types in a team led by Dr. Teijo Pellinen

We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher for a fully funded, 4-year research position in multiplexed immunofluorescence profiling of metastases from various cancer types. This project, part of the Mac4Me consortium, involves advanced tissue imaging and computational analysis to study immune-tumor cell interactions in clinical samples, including brain, bone, and liver metastases. You will work closely with Genevia Technologies Oy (Finland) and The Norwegian Radium Hospital (Norway) to integrate imaging data with multi-omics datasets using cutting-edge AI tools.

This position is part of the European Union's Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network programme, which focuses on identifying new immunotherapy targets through innovative research on tumor-immune system interactions. The Mac4Me network provides a unique training environment, combining expertise from 18 academic and industry partners across Europe. Successful candidates will benefit from interdisciplinary training, research visits, and opportunities for skill development in fields ranging from systems biology to AI-driven cancer research.

Work tasks

As a Doctoral Researcher in Dr. Teijo Pellinen’s team, you will apply innovative multiplexed immunofluorescence technology to spatially profile cells and their interactions in intact tumor tissue sections. You will analyze imaging data to uncover clinically relevant patterns by linking the imaging results to patient health records using advanced computational methods. Key objectives of this PhD project include:


	Designing and constructing tissue microarrays (TMAs) with appropriate control tissues, including tumor tissues (prostate cancer, breast cancer, neuroblastoma), metastasis target tissues (bone, liver, brain), and tissues with high immune cell content (e.g., lymph node, appendix).
	Collecting and organizing clinical and pathological data associated with these tissue samples into a shared clinical database.
	Developing and optimizing antibody panels for multiplex fluorescence immunohistochemistry (mfIHC).
	Performing mfIHC on TMAs and analyzing the resulting high-resolution images for single-cell phenotyping.


Expected results

This project will provide crucial insights into immune cell behaviour within metastases from prostate cancer, breast cancer, and neuroblastoma. Through single-cell spatial imaging, you will identify the key immune cell subsets and their activation or inhibition states in clinical metastasis samples. The project will also reveal the interactions and proximities between immune cells and tumor cells, offering a deeper understanding of immune responses in metastatic environments.

The imaging data will be systematically indexed and integrated with clinical datasets. You will collaborate with partners from Genevia Technologies Oy and The Norwegian Radium Hospital to merge your results with additional multi-omics data. These analyses will contribute to identifying new immune targets and potential therapeutic approaches for cancer treatment.

The Doctoral Researcher will be based at the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), University of Helsinki, and work within a vibrant multidisciplinary team embedded in the wider context of Dr. Olli Kallioniemi’s Precision Systems Medicine group at the University of Helsinki (Precision systems medicine | University of Helsinki).

Eligibility criteriaTo be eligible for this position, you must meet the following criteria:


	Transnational mobility: At the time of recruitment, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to your start date.
	Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs): You must have less than 4 years of research experience since completing your first MSc degree and must not have been awarded a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.
	English proficiency: You must have a strong command of the English language, demonstrated through a recognized English proficiency certificate.
