About the role:

We are looking for interdisciplinary scientists focused on applying and integrating physical and life sciences approaches to understand the complexity of living systems and enable technologies seeking to engineer biology. This includes combining empirical, theoretical and computational/AI methods from different disciplines and across scales, spanning molecules, cells, organs, organisms and populations.

Successful candidates will play a key role in developing and executing internationally leading research and work collaboratively across King’s. You will have a strong research track record, demonstrating interdisciplinary engagement, and be ready to grow a research programme that attracts external funding. You will also be committed to educating scientists and researchers of the future through a range of interdisciplinary undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes.

We also wish to maximise the relevance of our work to society through high impact research through engagement with industry and public engagement that engages diverse audiences, especially in our local communities in London and beyond.

 Description As part of San Diego State University's (SDSU) Strategic Plan and the goal of leveraging our university's unique identity, SDSU aims to hire two initial faculty to enhance the quantity and quality of public facing and interdisciplinary border scholarship. Located in a biodiversity hotspot and the most diverse county in the continental US, just north of the San Ysidro/Tijuana port of entry - the busiest border crossing in the world that bisects Kumeyaay homelands - SDSU has long been an incubator for U.S./Mexico border-related research (i.e., binational biodiversity and water management, migration and displacement, national securitization, regional development). SDSU is looking to recruit two scholars to join a diverse cohort of colleagues from a broad range of disciplines and a variety of academic and research backgrounds addressing borders broadly defined both geographically and conceptually. Candidates must clearly demonstrate how their research, scholarship, and/or creative activities are collaborative/interdisciplinary and engage with borders as understood in their disciplines.While we live in an increasingly interconnected world, nation-state borders and the concomitant processes impacted by their existence (migration, policing, free trade, illicit economy, drug trafficking, water and air pollution, water/natural resource management to name a few) remain as steadfast concerns as ever. Border spaces have also been sites of positive change and interactions including binational trade and development, multi-ethnic communities, language diffusion, and collaborative engagements in addressing multinational concerns. At the time of the fall of the Berlin wall, there were only about a dozen border walls around the world. Today nearly a hundred border walls have been built the world over. The U.S./Mexico border has been an integral site for much theorizing (border as laboratory, borderlands theory, border gnosis) that has led to the broader interdisciplinary field of Border Studies, anchored in the study of nation-state borders, but itself crossing boundaries across disciplinary traditions, objects of study, sites of research, and modes of inquiry. Border Studies has also been an intellectual space for challenging the boundaries of academic disciplines and the "two cultures" (Sciences and Humanities; "facts" vs. "values") that have long structured and delimited epistemological divides in academic thinking and knowledge production. Public-facing scholarship is academic work designed to transcend such divides and be relevant to broad audiences or practitioners who might take the scholarship to the people most affected in timely and ethical waysQualifications As we continue to develop one of SDSU's areas of expertise in border studies, we seek applicants who engage in border scholarship broadly conceived. We welcome applications from scholars in any discipline whose work addresses any of a myriad of border issues as understood in their fields and not just limited to nation state borders. Examples may include, but are not limited to, Indigenous Borderlands, border ethnomusicology, history of science, borders of disciplinary thinking, cross-border land and resource management, binational biodiversity, transborder ecologies and built environments, chaos theory, transnational public health, border art, comparative border studies, cross-border leadership and entrepreneurship, border cities, border economies, technologies of care, border cinema, sustainable agriculture, alternative sustainable tourism management, borderlands activism(s), border environmental health, transborder environmental engineering, sustainable planning in border regions, multinational public policy, border indigenous sciences. Scholars who work on different border sites around the world, at and beyond the U.S/Mexico border, and have demonstrated success with extramural funding, are encouraged to apply.Understanding Public ScholarshipIn the current fast-paced media world, public scholarship takes many forms. Podcasts, crossover/mass market books, K-12 curriculum, media interviews, high-traffic/interactive educational websites, art and performance, cinema, and public writing are all ways for scholars to share knowledge and pose questions with an audience beyond the academy. Practitioners who also have a foot in the academic world is another illustrative example of how one might contribute to public scholarship. Further examples include regular or consistent op-eds, public lectures, exhibits or performances, and social media visibility. This varies according to disciplines as well. For example, there are well established conversations in Museum Studies about how public-facing scholarship is about conducting research, teaching, and practice both with and for the public. Research models can also include work alongside and in collaboration with community-based organizations, tribal nations, or other relevant individuals or collective entities, rather than treating them as mere objects of research. Much work has been done on the question of research ethics and protocols when it comes to working with Indigenous or "vulnerable" communities.San Diego State University is the largest university in San Diego and the third largest in California. About the Role 

Flinders University is at the cutting edge of clinical Healthcare simulation nationally and is a world trailblazer in rural and regional health education. The Healthcare Simulation Hub team provide essential technical and laboratory support, Clinical Skills and Health Sciences store service, advice on Workplace Health and Safety for College activities and facilities, specialist input to laboratory design and construction, and timetabling of laboratory classes.

We are now seeking a Healthcare Technical Officer to join our team to provide technical advice and assistance for simulation activities that support clinical skills workshops for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. You will harness your expertise in clinical simulation to aid students during practical classes by maintaining and demonstration of equipment, such as simulated patients and high, medium, and low fidelity mannikins, procedures and techniques.

In this role, you will also:


	Maintain, monitor, and supervise stock control for smooth operation of all programs.
	Collate, record, report and resolve IT, AV and simulation equipment faults to minimise interruption to student learning.
	Maintain current records relating to simulation information including products, licenses, software versions,  ensuring specialised simulation equipment is regularly updated to latest versions.


About You 

You will demonstrate a high degree of initiative and experience in working with new and emerging healthcare simulation technologies. You will be an excellent communicator who harnesses their high-level interpersonal skills to develop strong and collegial relationships with staff, students, manufacturers, industry partners, and company representatives. Your natural ability to foster a positive and open team environment, will complement your ability to effectively supervise staff. Your keen attention to detail will allow you to prioritise tasks, autonomously meet deadlines, and demonstrate commitment to high quality service delivery. 

To be successful in this position, you will be eligible for registration as a registered nurse or midwife with AHPRA and possess a current practicing certificate or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education and training relevant to the position. You will have a demonstrated knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, including management of hazardous substances.

The role 

The applicant is expected to carry out research on data analysis and machine learning to analyse large quantities of data coming from Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) in urban settings. This requires a strong knowledge on data analysis, relevant machine learning techniques, signal processing and big data, and will require the use of high-performance computing and GPU acceleration. The successful applicant will have access to unexplored and one-of-a-kind datasets of DAS in urban settings to explore their soundscapes. You will also have the chance to get involved in the data acquisition process and to design controlled experiments to address specific research questions. The role will also involve supporting the PI and other team members in effective liaison with collaborators and stakeholders. 

This is a highly interdisciplinary project with researchers from the physical sciences, computer science, social sciences and arts and humanities, with a significant element of knowledge exchange and bidirectional engagement with stakeholders. You will join a supportive interdisciplinary environment in a working group of colleagues from different disciplines and you will have the opportunity to engage with non-academic stakeholders. The project comes with funding for a skill development program for the candidate to attend training courses to learn new methodologies, as well as travel budget for conference attendance and mentoring support. You will have research freedom to design your own path to achieve the project’s goals and independently explore related areas of research, obtain your own funding, and pursue other opportunities for your career development. You will be sitting at the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton.

About you

The successful applicant will have:


	A PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical area.
	Detailed understanding and knowledge of some relevant techniques, e.g., machine learning, deep learning, etc.
	Strong programming skills in one or more programming languages relevant to machine learning, signal processing and big data, like Python.
	Interest or experience working in interdisciplinary environments and willingness to get involved in interdisciplinary projects, providing expertise where needed.
	Good track record (relative to opportunity) of peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, book presses and/or conferences


The following would be advantageous:


	Knowledge of signal processing techniques 
	Experience working with big data, particularly in the context of sensing 
	Experience working in Linux environments and high-performance computing, including GPU and parallel computing
	Experience with statistical methods and advanced data analysis and visualisation


This is a highly interdisciplinary project, and preference will be given to candidates who show their interest and willingness to engage efficiently in interdisciplinary research and work with non-academic stakeholders.
