About

Basic information and contact details for the University of Health and Allied Sciences

institution

The University of Health and Allied Sciences was established in 2011, with its main campus located in Ho in Ghana, and the second campus in Hohoe. UHAS, as it is abbreviated, was the first university in the Volta region, and is the only state university entirely dedicated to training health professionals in Ghana.

At the university, there are 18 undergraduate programmes across six schools and one institute: allied health sciences, basic and biomedical sciences, medicine, nursing and midwifery, public health, pharmacy, and health research. The university also covers education and research in the following areas: sports and exercise medicine, dentistry, medical education and traditional and alternative medicines, however these are yet to be formally established.

There is also vocational training at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, which takes place during the students holiday period for around eight weeks. During this programme, students work at health facilities, institutions and communities across the country to gain hands-on experience in healthcare provision. This is an opportunity for students to gain knowledge from professionals and develop their skills in healthcare.

Ho is a district in the Volta region of south east Ghana, and is also its administrative and commercial centre, and Hohoe is the capital of the Volta region’s Hohoe municipality. The University of Health and Allied Sciences is accompanied by several other universities and colleges in the Volta region, including the Nursing Training College in Go and the Jaskian College of Education.
