About the opportunity

The Head, Research and Development for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is a dynamic leadership role that drives the Faculty's vision for research excellence. This role is at the forefront of shaping strategy, advising academic leaders, and spearheading innovative projects that enable research activity growth.

This role will guide the development of cutting-edge programs to support the growth of researchers at every stage of their careers, attract world-class research talent, diversify funding streams, and enhance research impact across the Faculty's diverse schools and research centres. You will play a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant research environment, providing strategic insights to academic leaders, and ensuring researchers have the resources and support they need to thrive.

Managing a small team, you will collaborate with key stakeholders to enrich the experience of HDR students and supervisors, ensuring a seamless integration of services that contribute to the University's overall mission. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of research within a leading academic institution, driving both innovation and excellence at a global level.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


	support the Faculty Leadership Group in defining research goals, developing strategic priorities, and implementing initiatives to achieve research objectives, including tracking effectiveness and addressing challenges.
	provide expert advice on governance, management, and decision-making with regard to strategic initiatives and research centres, and contribute to the Faculty's risk management,
	maintain oversight of emerging opportunities and factors impacting research activities, and offer insights on how to operate within the context of the external environment
	manage resources efficiently, monitor staff performance, and foster collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure high-quality research education and supervision
	identify and manage risks to the Faculty's research strategy and core services, ensuring compliance with University policies, regulatory requirements, and WHS management systems while proactively addressing potential risks and opportunities for improvement
	as nominated by the Associate Dean (Research), Dean or Faculty General Manager represent the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on any committees established by the University or externally.


About you


	postgraduate qualifications in humanities or social sciences, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
	in-depth understanding of the Higher Education sector and its alignment with the University's research goals with the ability to assess challenges and opportunities, translating them into effective programs for desired outcomes
	skilled in asking strategic questions, exploring options, and devising and implementing the best solutions
	strong leadership in guiding teams through complex situations and inspiring high performance and collaboration
	deep understanding of the Faculty's research plans, and adept at navigating university structures and resources to achieve goals.

About the Role

Accountable to the Governing Body (and a Fellow and Trustee), the Bursar plays a critical role in the leadership and operation of the College. The Bursar, as the senior non-academic Fellow of Pembroke College, has overall responsibility for the College’s finances and investments; estates and properties; HR; legal and compliance; risk management; and other professional services functions.

The role is central in supporting our charitable objectives, promoting our values and ensuring that we provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone.

Working closely with the Master, the Senior Tutor, other College Officers, Fellows and senior staff, the Bursar will implement the College’s Strategic Plan, guaranteeing its delivery through the oversight of financial and investment strategies and the provision of effective and appropriately resourced services to ensure the College’s operational activities support our strategic aims.

The Bursar is jointly responsible, with Fellows and Trustees, for the overall management and governance of the College, attending Governing Body and committee meetings, providing assurance on areas of responsibility and helping shape decisions and policy. You will play a leading role in the development and delivery of the College’s strategic objectives, particularly in the areas of financial and infrastructure plans, supporting the Development Office in fundraising and corporate strategy.

About You

We are looking for an individual with exceptional people management skills, capable of building and sustaining high levels of commitment in the teams for which they hold responsibility and delivering agile and efficient services for the College. Highly financially literate, you will support the College in defining a sustainable vision for the effective use of our resources and optimal deployment of these over the medium and long term.

You will be comfortable working within the collegiate environment, developing close effective relationships with colleagues, demonstrating a high level of emotional intelligence, exceptional communication and engagement skills, and leading with kindness and respect.

You will recognise the importance of consensus in decision-making and in engaging the Fellowship in operational matters. You will possess a broad range of skills, experience and qualifications, including but not limited to:


	Excellent academic attainment (degree or equivalent qualification). 
	Professional or post-graduate qualification e.g. Accountancy Body affiliation and/or MBA are desirable but not essential.
	Proven record of success in management of people and finance in a complex environment.
	Demonstrable commercial experience. Financially literate with a sound understanding of financial accounts, budgets and forecasts.
	Experience of leading and inspiring multi-disciplinary teams in a fair and empathetic way. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
	Adaptable and able to manage conflicting requirements whilst focusing on key priorities. Collaborative style coupled with a proven ability to deliver.


Terms

The Bursar’s salary will be set within a range from £90,655 to £102,011 pa. The post is pensionable with the USS Pension Scheme available. Generous dining rights apply when the College kitchens are open. The post carries an annual leave entitlement of 33 days, including eight statutory holidays, to be taken in agreement with the Master and normally outside term. There is also a housing allowance associated with the role. This role is full-time and based in Cambridge.

Qualifications

Position purpose

You will be involved in delivering high-quality veterinary teaching, providing clinical instruction, and undertaking research.

Key responsibilities:


	Delivery of tutorials, lectures, seminars, practicals, laboratories, workshops and clinical instruction through all modes of teaching and delivery mediums
