The University of Veracruz (UV) was founded in 1944 and has grown to be one of Mexico’s largest higher education institutions. For more than 70 years, the university has expanded its services to every spot in the state of Veracruz. To date, the school has campuses in five regions of the state in 14 major cities, namely: Xalapa, Veracruz, Boca del Río, Orizaba, Córdoba, Río Blanco, Amatlán, Nogales, Camerino Z. Mendoza, Poza Rica, Tuxpan, Minatitlán, Coatzacoalcos and Acayucan.

The university motto is "Art, Science, Light" and has built a solid reputation in arts, biology and agricultural sciences, health sciences, economics and business administration and liberal arts. The university is well known for its numerous research centres, language centres, technology labs, a university hospital, art workshops and library services that cater to more than 80,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students in more than 300 programmes at different levels.

In the region of Xalapa, the university has 32 schools, 22 institutes and research centres, one children’s musical induction centre, one language centre, one foreign languages department, two self-access language learning centres, two arts workshops, one foreign students' school, one advanced technology lab, one analytic resolution support services unit, one school hospital and one library services and information unit (USBI).

In Veracruz there are 13 schools, four institutes and research centres, one children’s musical induction centre, one language centre, two self-access language learning centres, one art workshop and one USBI.

In Orizaba-Córdoba there are eight schools, two language centres, two self-access language learning centres and an advanced technology lab. In Poza Rica there are 13 schools, one language centre, a self-access language learning centre, and two art workshops.

Finally in Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán there are eight schools, one language centre, two self-access learning centres and two USBIs.

UV maintains partnerships with international universities through the North American Mobility Project, a transnational academic programme that links them to the Georgia Southern University in USA and Wilfred Laurier University in Canada. The institution currently has over 170 international agreements with partner universities and organisations from 28 countries for student and faculty exchange, as well as for scientific and cultural cooperation.

The university is dedicated to sustainable development and giving back to the community through its collaboration with both the public and private sector in various projects including providing academic support to the indigenous people and aiding disadvantaged communities.

UV is well-known for its support in the development and promotion of art and culture. It is home to a variety of classical, popular and traditional music groups, including the renowned Xalapa Symphony Orchestra as well as a prestigious theatre and dance company.

Visiting Veracruz is the first step to enjoying the wonders of the Gulf of Mexico. There are many buildings that coexist peacefully with the modern, historical and military buildings, parks, museums, beaches, an aquarium and boardwalk.
