On the Times Higher Education Student Twitter feed (@THEUniAdvice, if you aren’t already a follower), we have spells where we ask students to look after the account for a week to share their university experiences.
Recently, Huixi Yao, a fourth year student at the University of Auckland, shared her experiences of going to university in New Zealand as an international student. She tweeted about what she does in her spare time, the amazing food available in the city and how she overcame language barriers. You can read some of her tweets below.
This week @AucklandUni student Huixi Yao will be taking over the THE Student twitter to share what life is like at the university and in New Zealand, Follow along with #UniAdviceWeek pic.twitter.com/TcRjedNzCW

This is my fourth year of study in the University of Auckland, and one thing I like about it is the #FOOD
— Times Higher Student (@THEUniAdvice) August 6, 2018
Wonderful eating spots all over the place, waiting for you to discover!
These cuties motivates me to get up and go to school every single day #uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/mIe8hPNlZ7
As a commerce student, Owen G Glenn Building is possibly the building which I spend most time in. This is where I attend lectures, events, meetings, and self-study, as it is loaded with lecture theaters, study spaces, and private meeting rooms.

Pretty cool isn't it? #uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/ghDFGB4o83
Besides studying, I also work at the International Office of @AucklandUni

Social media assistant is my role, and I really enjoy it. Work experience is just as important as your grade, it will help you gain competitive advantage to pursue your career #uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/gfjVrrmC7D
I highly recommended everyone to join at least one club in uni, it will really broaden your outlook and gives you opportunities to gain different experience.

I am a member of NZCSA, which is a Chinese student association, and we do tons of events and volunteering.#uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/4PxcrJkI35
#NewZealand is a great place for sightseeing, the view is just stunning

I enjoy visiting the #beach, it is truly relaxing and stress releasing. Luckily, there are enough beaches all over #Auckland that I can always find one nearby #uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/0wlUJu0bAy
When I first came to #NewZealand, I was worried about getting homesick.
— Times Higher Student (@THEUniAdvice) August 9, 2018
But luckily the people here are very lovely, they take good care of me
Then I noticed there are lots of Chinese restaurants in #Auckland, I guess home-food is the best cure for homesickness. #uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/NRbjkGZwD4
Instead of student halls, I chose to rent a 3-bedroom house with friends. This gives us plenty space to cook, to study, and to hangout with friends. We have a small front yard where we BBQ and enjoy the amazing stars, and we invite friends over for movies and studying.#uniadviceweek pic.twitter.com/NSddAj7Z8G

Language barrier is a problem that all international students are struggling with. I found a way to #LearnEnglish with no pain but only joy. Watch English TV series!
— Times Higher Student (@THEUniAdvice) August 12, 2018
This helps me to get familiar with the English speaking environment even when I'm alone.#uniadviceweek
#AucklandUniversity's city campus is located in the city center, so it's a pretty convenient location for students living in any part of #Auckland. Also, because of this location, we don't exactly have a "campus", the buildings are located separately in the city. #uniadviceweek
