关于 Scripps College
A member of the Claremont Colleges consortium, Scripps College is a small women’s college in Claremont, California.
The seven member Claremont Colleges consortium were all founded in the 1920s in order to provide the specilisation and flexibility of a large university to five smaller institutions, all of which are within walking distance of one another. In this sense, it is similar to the collegiate systems of Oxford University and Cambridge University in the UK.
The Claremont Colleges system allows students to enroll in any of the majors available at any member college, providing a broad range of study fields and allowing students to create a specialized program of study.
Ellen Browning Scripps, a journalist and an ardent supporter of women’s suffrage and education, established the college in 1926 to promote the education of women for professional careers.
The 32-acre Scripps College campus has featured as one of America’s most beautiful college campuses in a range of well-known publications, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are areas of fruit trees available to the students as well as a rose garden, and the olive trees on-campus are harvested to create award-winning olive oil.
Located in the middle of the Claremont Colleges, the small town of Claremont is just 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles allowing students to learn in a safe and friendly environment whilst being within a short distance of one of the most vibrant cities in the US.
Notable former students include sculptor Alison Saar, actress China Chow, broadcast journalist Serena Altschul and political commentator Molly Ivins.
