The most innocent gesture is in danger of being misconstrued these days amid concern over standards in public life. At the Scotcat lunch, Jim MacCallum, vice principal of St Andrews University, gallantly donated his portion of pavlova to a sweet-toothed hackette who had already made short work of her own plateful. This led to cries of outrage from his fellow academics: "What would Lord Nolan say?''
