Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam, a country that boasts growth at a time of international economic uncertainty. “Vietnam is one of the few economies globally that experienced positive economic growth during the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Nguyen Minh Ha, president of Ho Chi Minh City Open University. He says Vietnam is one of the most attractive investment markets in South-east Asia thanks to its economic resilience and expansion.

Ho Chi Minh City Open University is positioned at the heart of Vietnam’s growth, and it has identified a need to cultivate future leaders who can contribute to the region’s success. National recruitment demands are concentrated in three major urban areas, with Ho Chi Minh City accounting for nearly 80 per cent of the country’s total, Minh Ha explains. “It is expected that the human resource demand will increase in 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, resulting in about 280,000 to 300,000 jobs. Job opportunities for graduates are huge in the Vietnamese labour market,” Minh Ha says.

Key to meeting this recruitment demand is the ability to nurture global talent. Ho Chi Minh City Open University offers international students a wide range of scholarships, covering 50 per cent to 100 per cent of tuition fees in courses at undergraduate, master’s and doctorate levels. To be eligible for a 100 per cent scholarship, students must meet the course’s academic criteria and hold a recognised language proficiency certificate.

Ho Chi Minh City Open University has a community focus, and its Open Bright Scholarship supports this goal. The scholarship is reserved for learners with a record of participating in community schemes. “Priority will be given to learners who have won prizes for internationally recognised social and community activities,” Minh Ha says. Full scholarships are also available for Vietnamese courses, which include an annual cost-of-living grant.

After completing their studies, students receive career support from the university’s student support programme. “We offer advice, events such as job fairs and programmes specifically designed to help graduates understand the local job market and essential skills for work,” Minh Ha says.

The university’s insight into the jobs market comes from decades of “research excellence”, he explains. “After 30 years of establishment and development, Ho Chi Minh City Open University is one of the leading prestigious public universities in Vietnam, with a reputation of improving training quality,” Minh Ha says. Two of the university’s goals are to expand international cooperation and to increase scientific research undertaken by lecturers and students, he adds.
