Lorestan University of Medical Sciences is in the mountainous Lorestan province in the West of Iran.
It is part of Iran’s national system of publicly-funded medical schools which also act as "medical guardian" for their provinces.
Founded as a medical college in the city of Khorramabad in 1986, it attained full university status in 1993, and has subsequently developed satellite campuses in Aljoodarz, Poldakhtar and Boroujerd.
Its founding school of nursing expanded to incorporate midwifery in 1992 and has been able to confer degrees in its newer discipline since 2006.
There are now also schools in medicine, laboratory science, health and nutritionz, environmental medicine and family medicine and allied medical sciences, now incorporating subjects such as anaesthesiology, health information technology and radiology, dentistry and pharmacy.
Courses are taught in either English or Farsi.
Based in an academic quarter of Khorramabad, its near-neighbours include Azad University, a veterinary hospital, Lorestan University, the city’s science and technology park and Imam Reza hospital and a mental health unit with 48 beds which is part of its province-wide network of associated hospitals.
