Universities in the US that accept the gaokao

For Chinese students planning to study in the US, it can be helpful to know which universities accept the gaokao

    China’s National College Entrance Examination (NCEE), or gaokao, is the admission test that all final-year school students in the country must take if they wish to win a place in a Chinese university.

    Many international universities now accept the gaokao as part of a student’s application form. If you have taken the gaokao and are considering studying abroad, then here is a list of all the universities in the US accepting the gaokao.

    It is important to check all the entry requirements with your university, as most of the universities will also require additional tests such as English language tests and other high school certificates.

    US universities that accept gaokao/NCEE results

    University of Delaware

    The University of Delaware accepts gaokao English as a way of showing English proficiency. 

    University of San Francisco

    The University of San Francisco offers a special accelerated admissions procedure for Chinese students who have achieved excellent gaokao scores. Students are also required to submit their school record and have an interview. 

    Temple University

    Temple University accepts the gaokao as a way of showing English proficiency. Accepted scores will depend on the conditional admission level. 

    Drew University

    Drew University accepts the English gaokao with a subscore minimum of 120/150 or 96/120 (Jiangsu). 

    New York University

    For entry into New York University, Chinese students need to provide transcripts for Senior 1 and 2 grades, as well as grades to date for Senior 3. Predicted results are not accepted. 

    Brown University

    Scores will vary between courses, but Chinese students will be expected to submit transcripts of predicted or actual scores as part of their application. 

    University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

    Gaokao or Huikao results, along with official English translations, are required for enrolment, unless other international schooling credentials are presented. 

    Suffolk University

    Students who have taken the gaokao can contact the admissions office and arrange an interview. 

    Saint Louis University

    Students must have an overall score middle of Tier 2 or better and 125/150 English (100/120 Jiangsu). 

    Oregon State University

    Students must submit their gaokao scores as part of their application. 

    Hofstra University

    Students must have a score of 120 or higher and also undergo an online interview as part of their application. 

    University of New Hampshire

    Students can include the gaokao results as part of their application. 

    University of Alabama at Birmingham

    A minimum gaokao score of 120 is required to study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham

    Illinois State University

    Students must have a minimum score of 110 to study at Illinois State University.

    Colorado State University

    The university requires a gaokao English score of 105 or higher and an online interview with an international admissions counsellor.
